I know its a little late, but this is a little journal post about my experience at Comic Fiesta which was held in KLCC, Kuala Lumpur. I wrote it when I first reached home. I edited the entry for length but over the course of the next 2 weeks i was busy with shoots/new year preperations so I didn’t have time to finalize it, but here it is finally!
Comic Fiesta has come and gone…and while its my first time going overseas for a con, it certainly won’t be my last.
Boarding the flight at Terminal 1 with Seras and Holydust (thanks for helping to organize everything guys!), I couldn’t help but feel scared and apprehensive; how are the Malaysians like? Will I be treated like some sort of weirdo?
All that disappeared from the moment I checked into Impiana Hotel with Blacklash Jo, I was greeted by by both Singaporean/Malaysian Cosplayers and Photogs alike, and while it was in the heart of KL that this happened, I couldn’t stop feeling something familiar; I was in a home away from home.
It was the first evening (Friday) and I had a very, very late dinner with Kazeki Ki and her bf. Returning to the hotel, we prepared for the event the next day and turned in for the night. As I was falling asleep, my mind was wandering all over; How are the Malaysians Cossers/Photogs like? What was the actual place going to look like? How would the event be like?
The next day, Jo and I woke up bright and early to have breakfast at the hotel and bumped into Steven Wee Shinji Sg Fariz Asuka and Amano as well as Luna En Grey and a few others I can’t remember (sorry poor memory!) I could easily tell that they were as excited as I was, although they were mostly CF Veterans by now.
After doing a quick shoot with Kazeki and Jo (doing SuckerPunch!) at an empty carpark near the event grounds, we headed into the event area and was overwhelmed by the amount of people there. There was also a huge queue (infamous by now, many complaints regarding this) to enter the event. I got to work and got the photos/videos I needed for the video i was doing for PixelWords. I was happy to see many familiar faces: Fariz, Lawliet, Nik, Viospace, Reiko, Shinji, Garion, Aya, Frank, Skye, Ash, Sakurazaki and Togusa (just to name a few LOL)
As the day went on, I started to notice something in the air during the event; it was a friendly, cheerful mood although people were queuing. Hugs were exchanged all over and there was a tinge of playfulness. This feeling went on, even in the next day.
At night, I met up with Togusa, Jimmy, Shiro Ang, Kazeki, Jarold, Windy(!!), Selicia and her sister for a drink @ Skybar on top of Trader’s Hotel. The view there was nice, and although it was almost a full house, we manage to find a corner where we could enjoy ourselves, and we had fun. Just before we left, we managed to even get high on the music (which kinda sucked a little after a while)
Walking back to Impiana after the party was a fun affair as we walked back with Kazeki and Jarold and had a chit chat session before we returned to our room to bath and turn in for the night.
I had to wake up bright and early for the next day, as I had a shoot with Jimmy for Selicia and her sister (doing Vincent and Tifa respectively). We got a cab down to the deserted building next to TimeSquare and proceeded with the shoot before cabbing back to the event grounds.
By the 2nd day, most of the Cosplayers have managed to find their way into Hall 4, and what a sight it was! Cosplayers were moving around having fun with one another, interacting and chatting. The feeling I got here was so much more different than the feeling I get during Singapore Cons. I wish I could put a finger on what exactly it was.
Jimmy had some shoots to do for other Cosplayers while I had to finish up the video project I was doing. So it wasn’t until at night that I managed to meet up with Kemuri, Cili Padi and Kero for a nice dinner at DAIDOMON! For 50+ Ringgit I had my fill of Chicken and Beef to last a week! Food taste great and its affordable as well! It was here that Jimmy earned his nickname as “Sotong Man” HAHAHA.
At night, we had a mini post-CF Party at Zander’s Junior Suite. It was where I met Judith (HI!!!) for the first time. Jimmy, Frank, Aya, Skye, Sakurazaki, Togusa, Lawliet, Stanley and Tristan (our fake Stanman) were there as well. We had plenty of fun there eh Jimmy? Especially with Frank eh? *evil grin*
As the night weared on, I couldn’t help but feel crappy; as the adrendaline wore off, the crappy realization that I will be going back to Singapore the next day set in. Hard. It was a rather sleepless night for me back in the room.
Monday morning came and we woke up early to start packing up and getting ready to meet the rest for a late breakfast/early lunch at A&W. Jacqueline Lavina was kind enough to point us the right direction and lead us to a nice shopping centre (The Bugis of KL it seems) to do some last minute shopping before we headed back to the hotel to grab a cab to KLIA for our flight back.
On the way back, I couldn’t help but feel that a part of me was left behind in KL during these two days; even though it was such a short trip. The people I met, the wonderful Cosplays I saw and the electric atmosphere has left a lasting, captivated impression in my heart forever. This is my first overseas Con and yet, there is this magical, inexplicable feeling that draws me into wanting to go again next year, and stay even longer!
Thank you everyone, to all those who made my stay a memorable, magical and most importantly, fun-filled event that I will not soon forget and make me tear my hair out in frustration as I (painfully) count down to the 350+ days to the next CF.
